Utah’s Safest Cities

Traveling can be unsettling sometimes when in a different city or unfamiliar location and being safe can be a real concern.  Recently Safewise.com release a list of the 40 safest cities in Utah.   The Best Western Coral Hills is located just two blocks for the St. George Police Department.

Congratulations to Santa Clara, Utah,  Ivins, Utah for being the #16 Safest City in Utah!  Hurricane City Utah followed at #17, and City of St. George at #38.

Utah's Top 40 Safest Cities

Utah’s Top 40 Safest Cities

16. Safe in Santa Clara/Ivins

Although the Santa Clara Police Department was just created in 2012, this brave, little department takes its position seriously, landing the cities of Santa Clara and Ivins at number 16 on our list. From humble beginnings as a fruit and produce hub, the city has since left its fruit stand ways and become a popular suburb of …the larger Southern Utah town, St. George.
Although produce carts no longer line the streets of Santa Clara, the community has stayed just as sweet. A recent $10,000,000 project that helped renovate and expand the city’s historic downtown area is evidence of Santa Clara’s growth, proudly gaining more and more residents each year. This rapid growth is further proof of the passionate community that makes Santa Clara a desirable place to be.   Violent Crimes Per 1,000: 0.23    Property Crimes Per 1,000: 6.56

17. Safe in Hurricane

Settled as part of Brigham Young’s Cotton Mission, Hurricane is an active, outdoor community that has expanded from an agricultural settlement to a top recreation destination. But this southern Utah town hasn’t traveled too far from its roots with two operational peach and apricot orchards that are still managed by the LDS Church. In addition to farming, the city is now home to well-regarded golf courses and two reservoir lakes noted for their outstanding bass fishing.

This gateway to Utah’s stunning national parks and monuments does a good job of keeping its city safe for both residents and visitors. Relying on strong relationships within the community and proactive crime prevention and awareness efforts, the Hurricane City Police Department has an impressive record, with only 21 violent crimes reported in 2012 for this town of almost 15,000.  Violent Crimes Per 1,000: 1.47   Property Crimes Per 1,000: 19.74

 38. Safe in St. George

One of the few southern Utah cities on our list, St. George embodies the picture of Utah’s red rocks and towering plateaus. A popular tourist destination, St. George is generally temperate year-round, with short, dry winters. This idyllic weather has made St. George a popular golf destination. Visitors are also attracted to St. George for its location near Zion National Park, one of Utah’s most popular and a must-see in this area.

Locals get to have this breathtaking landscape as their backyard and playground, a major draw for many St. George residents. Add to that the security of this outdoorsy community, with only two violent crime incidents per 1,000 people, and it’s easy to see that this town is a great one to call home. Take one trip to this city and watch the rocks that surround St. George glow orange during sunset—you’ll never want to leave.  Violent Crimes Per 1,000: 2.05  Property Crimes Per 1,000: 20.60

Flag Day & Flag Retirement Ceremony

Happy Flag Day Everyone!   Scroll to the second half of this blog to find out about the Flag Retirement Ceremony.

flag day

Do you know about flag day?

On June 14, 1777 the second Continental Congress adopted a resolution establishing the flag of the United States.  Over a hundred years later a Wisconsin school teacher began to advocate for recognizing June 14 as the Flag’s Birthday or Flag Day.  Then in 1916, President Wilson issued Presidential Proclamation 1335 in which he “suggested” and “requested” that every community in the United States should observe June 14 as Flag Day.  Congress subsequently passed a law in 1949 which established June 14 as Flag Day and requested the President to issue an annual proclamation for Flag Day.  This proclamation instructs U.S. government officials to display the flag on all Government buildings and asks the people of the United States to observe the day in honor of the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.  The current law can be found in the United States Code, Title 36, section 110.

As well as law establishing the official flag and Flag Day, Congress has also passed laws regarding the design of the flag as well as laws regarding the time, occasions, position and manner of display. These laws can be found in Title 4 of the United States Code, sections 1-10.

  • Section 5 of this Title states that this law pertains to the display and use of the flag for use by civilians or civilian groups.
  • Section 6 lays out the “Time and occasions for display.”
  • Section 7 gives information about the position and manner of display.

Flag-Day-21-195x300

So what about that Flag Retirement Ceremony?   ST. GEORGE – Flag Day, a day set aside nationally to honor Old Glory, the United States flag, is this Saturday. That morning, city streets will be lined with American flags as one home after another has the flag posted in front of it by Boy Scout troops, volunteers and citizens. To conclude the day, old and worn flags will be disposed of in a reverent and respectful manner at the community’s first large scale Flag Retirement Ceremony and Military Tribute at the Dixie Sunbowl, just three blocks from Best Western Coral Hills.  The purpose of the flag retirement ceremony is to take old American flags that are beyond repair and burn them in an honorable and dignified manner.

The public is invited to attend the flag retirement ceremony and military tribute Saturday at 7:30 p.m., at the Dixie Sunbowl, 150 South 400 East in St. George. Admission is free.   Scouts are asked to be in uniform and arrive at 7 p.m.

Event recap

  • When: Saturday, 7:30-9 p.m.
  • Where: Dixie Sunbowl, 150 South 400 East in St. George
  • Admission: Free

The Wizard of Oz at Tuacahn

The Wizard of Oz at Tuacahn is absolutely AMAZING!  you must try to see this show.

See it as only Tuacahn can show it!

The Wizard of Oz

This musical adventure is a genuine family classic that made Judy Garland a star for her heartfelt performance as Dorothy Gale, an orphaned young girl unhappy with her drab  existence on her aunt and uncle’s dusty Kansas farm. Dorothy yearns to travel “over the rainbow” to a different world, and she gets her wish when a tornado whisks her and her little dog, Toto, to the colorful land of Oz. Having offended the Wicked Witch of the West, Dorothy is protected from the old crone’s wrath by the ruby slippers that she wears. At the suggestion of Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, Dorothy heads down the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City, where dwells the all-powerful Wizard of Oz, who might be able to help the girl return to Kansas. En route, she befriends a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion. The Scarecrow would like to have some brains, the Tin Man craves a heart, and the Lion wants to attain courage; hoping that the Wizard will help them too, they join Dorothy on her odyssey to the Emerald City.  But the arrival at the Emerald City only proves to be the beginning as an even greater adventure on Dorothy’s quests to return home.

June 5 – Oct 7, 2014,  $22.50 – $69.50

Call the Tuacahn Box Office today: 435-652-3300 Tuacahn.org

Guests attending Tuacahn shows and concerts receive a 10% discount on the regular room rate at BEST WESTERN Coral Hills.  Just show your tickets to the front desk agent at check in.  Also if you make your ticket purchase through the hotel you can receive up to 20% off on your tickets.

Did you Know?  The main reason the Wizard of Oz is such a classic today is because it did not do well at the box office after two separate releases?  The Wizard of Oz was too expensive to post a large profit upon initial release; however, after a disappointing reissue in 1955, it was sold to network television, where its annual showings made it a classic.
