Dixie State College Name Change…what will be the new name?

Dixie State College Name Change…what will be the new name?

Now that Dixie State College is about to earn university status what will be the new name of DSC?

Dixie State University of Course!

Dixie State Colllege, St. George, Utah

Dixie State Colllege, St. George, Utah

“The new name recommendation will advance to the Utah State Board of Regents for approval Friday, Jan. 25th, where it is also anticipated that at that meeting (held at DSC), the Regents will vote to formally approve university status for Dixie State College. The matter will then move on to the Utah State Legislature, where the new name of the institution will be presented for final legislative approval and funding consideration.

“As with stakeholders at large, the Trustees saw the merits of several different naming options, and the majority preferred ‘Dixie State University,’” Chair Caplin continued. “In the end the Board chose to unite as one body. We unanimously stand behind the Dixie State University name and encourage all stakeholders to do the same. This is the time to combine our resources, make our best contributions, and rally around this great institution.”

Congratulations to all those who worked so hard for the past 100 years to help this fine institution become what it is today.  Our many thanks!    (Click here to link to the complete story.)

Regardless of the name the college/univerisity is here to stay and so is the Best Western Coral Hills, one of the best hotels in Southern Utah. Click our our deals page to find specials specificaly for those in association with DSC.

Dickens Festival St. George, Utah – “It’s an Experience”

The Dickens Festival St. George, Utah is back!

Merry Christmas everyone!

We hope everyone’s Christmas holiday will be spent in the best way possible, with family and friends, with good food, good times and good spirits.

Every year the Dickens’ Festival in St. George is held the first Saturday of every December and the three days before.  And each year abbreviated plays are performed of the musicals “Scrooge” and “Oliver”. Below is a scene from “Scrooge”, in the fateful moment when Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by his past and now ghostly business partner Jacob Marley.  (Jacob is played by Mori Kessler, one of the employees at the Best Western Coral Hills – and we are proud of the great job he did.)

This Festival is not just another craft show, but a unique and unusual entertainment and shopping experience. Olde English shops, hundreds of period costumes, fortune tellers, orphans, royalty, and the “real” Father Christmas all combine to offer our guests a Christmas experience like no other!

The Festival is known for its unique gifts and quality merchandise. Shoppers come to The Dickens’ Festival for that special treasure. Join us as the streets of Olde London come to life!

If Odyssey Dance Theatre’s “Thriller” isn’t part of your yearly Halloween tradition, it should be. The spooky spectacular combines technical aspects of dance while paying homage to the stars of All Hallows’ Eve.

Throughout the two-hour program, “Thriller” highlights all the heroes of the season, including Frankenstein’s monster and his bride, skeletons, mummies and werewolves. But among the ghouls, you’ll find other unlikely heroes of Halloween, such as Bubbles the Clown and the “Giggle Girl,” who sings and maniacally laughs her way through songs such as “I Saw Mommy Killing Santa Claus.”

Critics agree that Odyssey Dance Theatre is nothing short of spectacular:

“Compelling dance performed to perfection! Young, trim, slim, and athletic…Great fun!” –The Spectrum

“Odyssey’s “Thriller”..a delightful “Dance Macabre”….As for humor, there were bucket loads. Laughs abounded during a “Romeo & Juliet” inspired “Frankenstein & Frankenstein” and “Jason Jam,” a work that used a lot of percussive dancing, a la “Stomp”, that spotlighted three “Friday the 13th” villains dancing with ice picks, machetes and, of all things, chain saws. The whole idea was cool…” — Scott Iwasaki, Deseret News.

Tuacahn’s Indoor Christmas Show – Forever Plaid

FOREVER PLAID: PLAID TIDINGS is a brand-new show that offers the best of FOREVER PLAID tied-up in a nifty package with a big Christmas bow on top! Filled with Christmas standards that have all been “Plaid-erized,” our boys are back to do their Christmas Special.

At first Francis, Jinx, Smudge, and Sparky aren’t sure why they’ve returned to Earth for another posthumous performance, but a phone call from the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know that they’re needed to put a little harmony into a discordant world. Sprinkled among the Christmas offerings are audience favorites like their riotous three minute and eleven second version of “The Ed Sullivan Show” – this time featuring the Rockettes, the Chipmunks and The Vienna Boys Choir, and a Plaid Caribbean Christmas which puts the “Day-O” in Excelsis! This truly “heaven-sent” holiday treat will lift audiences’ spirits and remind youngsters that not all good music has to be auto-tuned.

Tickets now on sale!

Salt to Saint Bike Relay Race

What is Salt to Saint?
The Salt To Saint Relay is Utah’s most exciting bicycle relay challenge. Teams of cyclists, consisting of 8 riders, 4 riders, 2 riders and even Solo riders, will push themselves, their sleeping habits, their cycling abilities and their idea of a good time to new limits. Imagine the bragging rights, inside jokes, camaraderie and stench that will be built up after 24 hours and 430ish miles of riding together, working together and cheering each other on.
Creating their own strategy, teams will try to get from Salt Lake City Utah to St George Utah as fast as possible. Cyclists, starting in the heart of Salt Lake City at the State Capitol building, will leapfrog their way south, riding and relaying on roads that have been chosen for their safety, beauty and challenge. Following historic Hwy 89 for the majority of the route, riders will pass through towns they never knew existed and through some of the most stunning scenery Utah has to offer.
With the distance of 430ish miles divided into 24 legs, each team will need to decide which distances and legs fit their individual teammates’ abilities. Legs vary in distance, but have an average distance of 17 miles. So not only will this event challenge even the toughest of on the road, but it is also achievable by the novice cyclist.

The Best Western Coral Hills is located only three blocks from Vernon Worthen Park, the finish line of the Salt To Saint Relay.  Rooms have been put aside for the participants of the this event.

Georges Corner Restaurant & Pub

George Pace owned and operated the Big Hand Café,

which stood on this same corner, during the 1930’s and 40’s.

The Big Hand Café was the center of town, the gathering spot,
the place where news was shared.

It quickly became a St. George icon and a stopping place for tourists

as they traveled through Southern Utah. The Greyhound bus would make

its one stop in town at the Big Hand and each time it pulled in the waitresses

would holler “bus in”, and they would get ready to serve the hungry travelers.

Best remembered for its sign of a big hand outlined with blinking lights pointing

to the front door and the lit up words “Especially Good Food”.

It was easy to find – it was located at the only stop light in town. It was one

of the first buildings to be “air cooled”, which was much desired in the hot

summers of Southern Utah.

George’s Corner Restaurant celebrates the history of St. George and honors

the great men and women who moved to this barren land and made it into a home.

As the old sign promised, we serve “Especially Good Food”.

George’s Corner is located only one block away from Best Western Coral Hills
