Halloween in St. George, Utah

Washington County School District Foundation invites you to celebrate Halloween on the Town and raise funds for Washington County Schools. “Halloween on the Town” features Southern Utah’s first “Haunted Cave” plus the family-friendly “Spooky Town Fair.”

While the Haunted Cave will entertain the community all month long, the Spooky Town Fair will be a one-day Halloween-themed fair-style event in downtown St. George at Town Square. All profits benefit the students in the Washington County School District.

If Odyssey Dance Theatre’s “Thriller” isn’t part of your yearly Halloween tradition, it should be. The spooky spectacular combines technical aspects of dance while paying homage to the stars of All Hallows’ Eve.

Throughout the two-hour program, “Thriller” highlights all the heroes of the season, including Frankenstein’s monster and his bride, skeletons, mummies and werewolves. But among the ghouls, you’ll find other unlikely heroes of Halloween, such as Bubbles the Clown and the “Giggle Girl,” who sings and maniacally laughs her way through songs such as “I Saw Mommy Killing Santa Claus.”

Critics agree that Odyssey Dance Theatre is nothing short of spectacular:

St. George Dinosaur Discovery at Johnson Farm

In 2000, local optometrist Dr. Sheldon Johnson was leveling a hill on his property in St. George, Utah. As he removed layers of sedimentary rock, he encountered a thick level of sandstone. As he tore it up in large blocks, a fantastic object was revealed – a three-dimensionally preserved dinosaur track. It was to be the first of thousands of tracks made by dinosaurs and other animals that have now been recognized or recovered from the numerous layers of sandstone and mudstone that formed almost 200 million years ago on the shores of an ancient lake in the vicinity of St. George.

 Dr. Johnson had seen dinosaur tracks in the region, but at first he was confused. The footprint he saw was visible in both the brittle clay below and also on the bottom of the sandstone block he had overturned. Experts, including Utah State Paleontologist, Dr. Jim Kirkland, came to help identify additional tracks at the site which revealed the extensive trackways to be found here.

Realizing that these tracks would be best served if they were maintained for scientific and educational purposes, Dr. Johnson and his wife, LaVerna, worked to set aside the land and its fossils. Eventually the Johnsons donated the tracks that had been found and arranged for the land to be cared for by the City of St. George. They worked with scientists, local businesses, and government officials on the local, state, and national level to create the museum that is here today. They founded the DinosaurAh!Torium Foundation that continues to preserve this site as a creative learning environment with hands-on activities that challenge, enlighten, and entertain the minds of all who come.

The best preserved and most numerous of the tracks today form the in-place trackway and exhibits of the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm. Many other fossils, including bones of dinosaurs and fish, shells of small aquatic animals, and leaves and seeds of plants, have joined the footprints to enable paleontologists to reconstruct the nearly 200 million year old ecosystem preserved here with unprecedented clarity, an extreme rarity for rocks of any time period.

Since the initial discovery, hundreds of thousands of visitors, including paleontologists from all over the world, have marveled at this unique discovery.

At first Francis, Jinx, Smudge, and Sparky aren’t sure why they’ve returned to Earth for another posthumous performance, but a phone call from the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know that they’re needed to put a little harmony into a discordant world. Sprinkled among the Christmas offerings are audience favorites like their riotous three minute and eleven second version of “The Ed Sullivan Show” – this time featuring the Rockettes, the Chipmunks and The Vienna Boys Choir, and a Plaid Caribbean Christmas which puts the “Day-O” in Excelsis! This truly “heaven-sent” holiday treat will lift audiences’ spirits and remind youngsters that not all good music has to be auto-tuned.

St George Marathon 2012 Is Almost Here.

Rated by Runner’s World as one of the four “Marathons to Build a Vacation Around” in the World. Included in Runner`s World 10 Most Scenic and Fastest Marathons and Top 20 Marathons in the USA. It begins in the majestic Pine Valley mountains and descends nearly 2600 feet through scenic southwest Utah, to the beautiful Worthern Park. The St. George Marathon is a point-to-point race which is USA Track & Field Certified & Sanctioned. Runner`s World listed the St. George Marathon as the fastest fall marathon. A fun race indeed–and scenic

The Best Western Coral Hills is located only three blocks from the buses and the finish line.  We offer a shuttle to the buses if needed and start breakfast at 4:00 a.m. for the runners and anyone else who would like to get up that early.

 In anticipation of the upcoming dedication of the new Dixie State College Jeffrey R. Holland Centennial Commons, DSC officials have announced contingency plans for the ceremony slated for Friday, September 7th, in the Avenna Center Cox Auditorium.

In an effort to accommodate all visitors to the campus that day, Dixie State officials have set up an overflow venue next door at the Burns Arena and will provide a live television feed of the ceremony on a projection screen. Seating in the overflow venues will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The formal ceremony begins at 10 a.m., and will include remarks from DSC President Dr. Stephen D. Nadauld and the building’s namesake, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, who is a 1963 graduate of Dixie College and a member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The dedication festivities will shift to the new Holland Centennial Commons at 11:15 a.m., and will include the official ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by the dedicatory prayer offered by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency of the LDS Church. Following the ribbon cutting, Dixie State will host an open house with refreshments.

In addition, the ceremony will be available via free live streaming video on DSC’s website (live.dixie.edu) and broadcast live on Dixie’s Community Education Channel (CEC). CEC will also re-broadcast the ceremony throughout the month and beyond, and the broadcast will be available online at www.voddov.com.

This event now presented in partnership with the Susan G. Komen Foundation will all proceeds donated to fund breast cancer research. There will be a 5K, 10K and 1 mile walk at the event. All breast cancer survivors will reciebe a secial pink shirt and will be recognized in a ceremony prior to the start of the race. Premier event sponsors are The Orange Peel and Canyon Media.

Snow Canyon Half Marathon and 5K (November 3rd)

A beautiful route that features 4 miles of the St. George Marathon Course and the scenic landscape of Snow Canyon State Park, and Entrada. ONE OF THE FASTEST CERTIFIED COURSES IN THE STATE!! The course is challenging, fast and primarily downhill! It is one of the most breathtaking courses St. George has to offer! 5K runners will start at Snow Canyon High School and do a course out on the trails and head back to also finish around the track!. Beginner: 200 yard swim, 5 mile bike, 1.5 mile run. Sprint 400 yard swim, 10 mile bike, 5K run. Kids beginner 50 yard swim, 1 mile bike, ½ mile run. Kids sprint 100 yard swim, 2 mile bike, ¾ mile run. Team relay will be run in the sprint division only! CAP OF 300 PER EACH DISTANCE! NO DAY OF RACE REGISTRATION!

Turkey Trot (November 17th)

Join us for this amazing family fun run! This untimed 5K and 1 Mile walk/ fun run helps to raise much needed food for the Dixie Care and Share in St. George! Bring 3 canned goods and get a ticket into the incredible raffle with tons of frozen turkeys and prizes being raffled off after! Registration will be $5 and onsite registration begins at 8:15am!!!

Expedition St. George Team Relay 50 Miles (December 1st)

A 50 mile team relay that loops all the way through and around the stunning St. George. Teams will see St. George like they never have before as there are tons of incredible scenery and challenging runs, as long as some easy fun ones in this relay! Teams will consist of 5 people (Open Men, Open Women and Co-Ed) with each individual completing a minimum of two legs (roughly 5 miles each). Post relay events will consist of a full banquet with dinner and an awards ceremony! THERE WILL BE NO DAY OF RACE REGISTRATION

Flag Day!

Flag Day 2012

For more than 200 years, the American flag has been the symbol of our nation’s strength and unity. It’s been a source of pride and inspiration for millions of citizens. And the American Flag has been a prominent icon in our national history. Here are the highlights of its unique past.

On January 1, 1776, the Continental Army was reorganized in accordance with a Congressional resolution which placed American forces under George Washington’s control. On that New Year’s Day the Continental Army was laying siege to Boston which had been taken over by the British Army. Washington ordered the Grand Union flag hoisted above his base at Prospect Hill. It had 13 alternate red and white stripes and the British Union Jack in the upper left-hand corner (the canton).

In May of 1776, Betsy Ross reported that she sewed the first American flag.

On June 14, 1777, in order to establish an official flag for the new nation, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act: “Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.”

Between 1777 and 1960, Congress passed several acts that changed the shape, design and arrangement of the flag and allowed for additional stars and stripes to be added to reflect the admission of each new state.

Today the flag consists of thirteen horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with 6 white. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies, the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well: Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor, White symbolizes Purity and Innocence and Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.
