St. George Events in May 2012

From the pleasant and quaint experiences of a small town to the serious and sophisticated happening of a big city…here’s a small sample of some of the events and activities during May 2012 in St. George, Utah and Surrounding Areas.

 Dino Days in Dixie 2012, April 30-May 5

Here comes Dino Days in Dixie, celebrating the 12th year since the discovery of these remarkable tracks! They will have a new Special Display “Where Do Dinosaurs Get Their Crazy Names?” A Grand Opening will be held on May 1st, there will be fun and games every day that week, new children’s play area, and maybe a surprise newcomer to the museum!  Ancestor Square Concert Series, every Thursday

7pm-8:30pm FREE, Sit near the rippling brook on the green facing the old Jail House patio, with the aromas of Italian, Mexican and Tai food wafting through a soft evening breeze as you sit back and enjoy the original tunes of new SUSWA songwriters and performers.  “CLASS” performed at Kayenta Outdoor Theater, May 3-5

Enjoy this talented troupe of players performing “CLASS”. Tickets $15, From Best Western Coral Hills turn right on St. George Blvd, proceed to and turn right onto Bluff Street and go west on Sunset Blvd through Santa Clara until it becomes Hwy 91.  International Star Wars Day, May 4th

 St. George Ironman 2012, May 5th

Saturday May 5th The last year of a full St. George Ironman.  Touted as possibly the most challenging Ironman course in the world beginning in 2013 the new course will become an Ironman 70.3.  The finish line is only three blocks away from the Best Western Coral Hills.

 Cotton Days 2012, Washington City, May 5-12th

Come celebrate 155 years of Washington City with weeklong activities and events.  The Cotton Days parade will be Saturday, May 12th at 9am followed by the Cotton Fest at the city park.

 Ivins Fitness Festival 2012, May 5th

Located at Unity Park and designated viewing area for the bicycle portion of the Ironman St. George.  The Fitness Festival will include an area to view the riders with music, food, youth activities and vendors from 9am to 3pm at 400 South 200 West, Ivins, Utah

 Cinco de Mayo, St. George 2012 (May 5th of course)

Located only three blocks away from the Best Western Coral Hills celebrate with all the music, food and dancing.  This family event takes place at the Catholic Church parking lot from 10am – 8pm at 157 North 200 West. St. George.

 Waste Water Treatment Plant Tours,  May 8

Ever wonder about how our waste water is processed and treated? What is done with it? Where does it go? This extensive tour will educate and show you those poecesses. 1pm – 4pm, FREE, 3780 S 1550 W, Bloomington.  Take Exit 4 off I-15 to Pioneer Rd South-take a Right onto Man-of-War and cont. to S Bloomington Rd-turn left and follow to 1550 W and turn left-cont to 3780 S and turn Right.  Culinary Water Plan Treatment Tours May 11

 5th Annual New Visions Art Show and Sale, May 11-12

 This year’s New Visions Annual Art Show will feature more than 30 acclaimed artists participating in the art show, sale, and “Quick-Draw” painting event.  The show and sale will take place noon-8pm on May 11th and 8am-4pm, May 12th with a silent auction at 2pm at the Santa Clara Town Hall, 2603 Santa Clara Drive, Santa Clara.  Crown Fighting Championships, May 12

 Foundation of DRMC Evening “Classic” 2012, May 16

Open to the public, this annual fundraiser to help fight against cancer welcomes golfers and non-golfers alike to participate in the “classic” evening from 6-10pm at the Dixie Center, 1835 Convention Center Drive, St. George.  The cost is $50 per person, complimentary to those who pay the golf sponsorship fee.  Zion Flute Festival 2012, at Springdale, May 17-19

A celebration of life, music and beauty at the 8th annual Zion Flute Festival at 118 Lion Blvd, Springdale, with evening concerts at the O. C. 18-March 25  Sears Dixie Invitational Art Show and Sale: This annual art show, now in its 25th year,  is one of the largest art events in Utah.  Located at the Delores Dore Eccles Fine Arts Center, 225 South 700 East, St. George. Featuring almost 300 pieces, 170 of which are artists from Utah and the United States.  Viewing is FREE to the public 10am-6pm, Monday – Saturdays and 2-6pm on Sundays.  Call 435-652-7909

24-25  St. George Family History Expo:  Join in the genealogy and family heritage jamboree at the Dixie Center,  1835 Convention Center Drive, St. George.  A complete schedule and admission information can be found at www.fhexpos.com.  The exhibit hall is FREE and open to the public both days.

You only turn 150 once and the City of St. George plans to celebrate big. Instead of holding a New Year’s party we will celebrate our 150th birthday January 10th-17th . All types of performances and events will be held and referred to as Heritage Days! All Heritage Days events are free to the public in honor of this place we call home. Happy Birthday St. George!

Decades of Dixie Heritage Festival

 

St. George, UtahThe City of St. George, the 13th to recieve a city charter in the state of Utah, is revving up to celebrate its 150th anniversary from January 10th – 17th, 2012.  The festival will include local talent, food vendors, children’s games and numerous exhibits of memorabilia, artifacts and items that were used in southern Utah’s Dixie and define our local area that are distinctive to this region from as early as 1862 through today such as quilts, artwork, furniture, clothing, houses wares, photography, musical instruments, news clippings and history displays from families, businesses or organizations.  All are invited to participate and join  in celebrating the diverse and wonderful place St. George has become. Display booths are open to the public and free of charge. The Decades of Dixie Festival will be held January 16th from 10am to 8pm and January 17th from 10am to 6pm at the Dixie Convention Center.

Christmas Nativity at the St. George, LDS Temple

St. George Temple Christmas Lights and Nativity

 As part of Christmas festivities, each year members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints hand thousands of Christmas lights and set up narrated nativity scene at the east entrance of the temple grounds. 

The public is welcome to walk around the temple grounds.  There is no charge.        

The St. George LDS temple is located only four blocks away from the Best Western Coral Hills; the closest hotel to the temple.

There are two FREE visitors’ centers on the temples city block.  The first center shares the beliefs of  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  The second visitor’s center shares the history of the St. George area and construction of the St. George Temple.

Tuacahn’s Festival of Lights

 Tuacahn’s Christmas Festival of Lights is presented every Wednesday,Thursday, Friday, Saturday evening from the day after Thanksgiving to December 23rd. Entrance to the Festival of Lights is free to the public. A Live Nativity is presented each night in the Amphitheater at 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Cost for the Nativity program is $2 per person or $10 per family. In addition to the Live Nativity, visitors can see the lights and listen to holiday music on the Tuacahn Plaza or sit by an open fire and sip hot chocolate from Tuacahn’s concession stand. For $1.00/pp, visitors can enjoy a holiday train ride on the Old Salty Train provided by our siter property Best Western Ruby’s Inn of Bryce Canyon National Park. Near the entrance to the Gift Gallery parents can bring their children to see Santa Claus from 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm.

Art on Main Walk, One Block Away!

Art on Main, St. George, next to Best Western Coral Hills

Stroll Main Street Friday, December 9th from 6:00 to 9:00 in the evening, and you will find artistic demonstrations and live music in the fine art galleries of downtown St. George as local creative talent comes together for the December Art On Main art walk. Fine art ranging from Utah artists James Christiansen and David Koch to Southern Utah talents Kate Starling and Jeff Ham to young emerging artists will be on display, as each gallery represents a different collection of fine art. Music will also vary from gallery to gallery. A punch card can also be obtained at the St. George Art Museum, which can be turned in at Twenty-Five Main Cafe for a chance to win a piece of artwork at 9:00 in the evening.
