Thriller returns for Halloween at Tuacahn

thriller1

Enjoy at haunting time at Tuacahn

Thriller, performed by Odyssey Dance Theater.

If Odyssey Dance Theatre’s “Thriller isn’t part of your yearly Halloween tradition, it should be. The spooky spectacular combines technical aspects of dance while paying homage to the stars of All Hallows’ Eve.

Throughout the two-hour program, “Thriller” highlights all the heroes of the season, including Frankenstein’s monster and his bride, skeletons, mummies and werewolves. But among the ghouls, you’ll find other unlikely heroes of Halloween, such as Bubbles the Clown and the “Giggle Girl,” who sings and maniacally laughs her way through songs such as “I Saw Mommy Killing Santa Claus.”

Critics agree that Odyssey Dance Theatre is nothing short of spectacular:

“Compelling dance performed to perfection! Young, trim, slim, and athletic…Great fun!” –The Spectrum

“Odyssey’s Thriller”..a delightful “Dance Macabre”….As for humor, there were bucket loads. Laughs abounded during a “Romeo & Juliet” inspired “Frankenstein & Frankenstein” and “Jason Jam,” a work that used a lot of percussive dancing, a la “Stomp”, that spotlighted three “Friday the 13th” villains dancing with ice picks, machetes and, of all things, chain saws. The whole idea was cool…” — Scott Iwasaki, Deseret News.

You can capsulate most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they’ve had and how many millions of albums they’ve sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you’re assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. To be sure, this band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt.

Even more than the Beatles, The Beach Boys found through their music the key to unfading youth-and they made copies for everyone. To these guys, the beach isn’t just a place where the surf comes to play-it’s where life is renewed and made whole again.

Few, if any, acts can match The Beach Boys’ concert presence, spirit and performance. They were center-stage at Live Aid, multiple Farm Aids, the Statue of Liberty’s 100th Anniversary Salute, the Super Bowl and the White House. On one day alone-July 4, 1985-they played to nearly 2 million fans at shows in Philadelphia and Washington, D. C.

In addition to founding Beach Boy Mike Love (lead vocals) and Beach Boy-vet Bruce Johnston (vocals/keyboards) –Christian Love (guitar/vocals), Randell Kirsch (bass/vocals), Tim Bonhomme (keyboards/vocals), John Cowsill of The Cowsills (percussion /vocals) and Scott Totten (guitar/vocals) round out the band.

The Nutcracker by the St. George Ballet

St. George Ballet Company, Shelia Bailey – Directory

Nutcracker performed by St. George Ballet this Dec 12-14, 2013

Nutcracker performed by St. George Ballet this Dec 12-14, 2013

William F. Christensen presented the first full length production of The Nutcracker Ballet in the United States in 1944. In kind of Bene` Arnold and Florence Christenson, the St. George Ballet Company has established his original choreography in Act I, scenes 1 & 2 as a part of their Nutcracker. Grown-ups and children will delight in seeing the mice and soldiers in battle before Clara continues into the Snow Kingdom and the Land of the Sweets to visit the Sugar Plum Fairy. Dancers from around the world entertain the Nutcracker Prince and Clara along with bringing smiles to the faces of all involved.

The St. George Ballet Company in association with Westside Studio of Performing Arts, under the direction of Sheila Bailey, with assistants Bene’ Arnold, Amber Shakespeare and Deborah Dawn, has enjoyed putting on the annual production of The Nutcracker Ballet for 12 Christmas seasons in southern Utah. Many families have made attending The Nutcracker a part of their Christmas tradition.

The cast features over 120 local dancers who will be sharing the stage with professional dancers Erica Bryce dancing Sugar Plum Fairy with Troy McGee her cavalier.  We welcome our own local master artist, Roy Fitzell playing Drosselmeyer.

Following Saturday’s matinee the children can attend Clara’s Party, “A Magical Journey”.  The party is held on stage meeting characters and cast, taking a trip through the Land of Sweets, sliding down the Mother Hubbard slide along with seeing behind the scenes operations of putting on the production. A craft and treat also make this a fun activity for all. Tickets for Clara’s Party are $8.00.

The St. George Ballet Company invites everyone to attend the full length Nutcracker Ballet.  The Nutcracker begins at 7:30 p.m. on December 12th, 13th and 14th at Desert Hills Theater. A matinee performance is on December 14th at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available at westsidestudio.org/tickets or call 674-9728.  Ticket prices are $20 and $15 for obstructed view.
