Reasons To Visit St. George

St. George is like the Vegas of Utah, except a lot less wild and a lot more beauty! It’s the place everyone wants to visit or move to. With moderate winters, Zion right down the road (basically) and over 300 days of sunshine, it’s hard to imagine why someone wouldn’t want to come to St. George for at least a weekend!

Things To Do

St. George is full of fun things to do, some of those things are events that the community holds, some are just out there for you to enjoy. For example, once a month on the first Friday, St. George holds “George Street Fest”. This is an event that helps local businesses by allowing them to have booths for visitors to come and check out. There is live music, food trucks and so much more! Every George Street Fest is unique in its own way.
There are a lot of things for kids to do here as well, with water parks, Fiesta Fun, Laser Mania, The Children’s Museum and more! You’ll never run out of things for the kiddos to do!

Places To Eat

This is something that St. George prides itself on. There are a plethora of different restaurants that are locally owned or franchised. Either way, there are so many options for dining that it makes it nearly impossible to choose where you want to eat! What keeps a lot of visitors coming back are our locally owned and operated restaurants, such as Cappelettis or Durangos! Dining in St. George is a wonderful experience.

Sights To See

One of the main reasons people keep coming to St. George is for it’s captivating and breathtaking landscapes. Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon and Snow Canyon State Park are all within a very short distance of St. George. Making this one of the top places to stay when you are looking for some good family fun adventure and stunning sights.

Sawyer Brown performs at Tuacahn

Friday, November 7 at 7:30 PM MST

Sawyer Brown, Founded in 1981, having played more than 4000 shows over the course of those years, and logging mileage well into the seven figures, the wheels are still turning and an ever-open road stretches out ahead. Link to the Sawyer Brown artist site.

“We are just who we are—period,” says lead singer Mark Miller when asked for some of the secrets to the band’s longevity. “From the beginning, we didn’t want to sell ourselves as something we weren’t. We’re blue collar, working class guys from the neighborhood who just happen to get up on stage at night and make music.” He then adds with a laugh, “OK, guys from the neighborhood who made some questionable clothing choices in the 80s—but it was the 80s, after all.”

From the looks of the band’s three-decade and still going career, they seem to be guys from everybody’s neighborhood. Keyboard player Gregg “Hobie” Hubbard adds, “It’s always humbling when someone comes up after a show and tells us that they hear themselves or their family in our music. I hope that they can look up there on stage and see themselves—because we can sure look out at them and see ourselves. Every day we’re on the road, one of the best parts of the day is walking around whatever town we’re playing in and just soaking it in—listening to folks talking in restaurants, just watching life unfold like it always does—one story at a time.”

Thriller returns for Halloween at Tuacahn

thriller1
Enjoy at haunting time at Tuacahn

Thriller, performed by Odyssey Dance Theater.

If Odyssey Dance Theatre’s “Thriller“ isn’t part of your yearly Halloween tradition, it should be. The spooky spectacular combines technical aspects of dance while paying homage to the stars of All Hallows’ Eve.

Throughout the two-hour program, “Thriller” highlights all the heroes of the season, including Frankenstein’s monster and his bride, skeletons, mummies and werewolves. But among the ghouls, you’ll find other unlikely heroes of Halloween, such as Bubbles the Clown and the “Giggle Girl,” who sings and maniacally laughs her way through songs such as “I Saw Mommy Killing Santa Claus.”

Critics agree that Odyssey Dance Theatre is nothing short of spectacular:

“Compelling dance performed to perfection! Young, trim, slim, and athletic…Great fun!” –The Spectrum

“Odyssey’s Thriller”..a delightful “Dance Macabre”….As for humor, there were bucket loads. Laughs abounded during a “Romeo & Juliet” inspired “Frankenstein & Frankenstein” and “Jason Jam,” a work that used a lot of percussive dancing, a la “Stomp”, that spotlighted three “Friday the 13th” villains dancing with ice picks, machetes and, of all things, chain saws. The whole idea was cool…” — Scott Iwasaki, Deseret News.

Pioneer Day

July 24th is Pioneer Day and a Utah state holiday.  REMEMBER that banks and government offices will be closed. It commemorate the entry of Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon pioneers into Utah’s Salt Lake Valley in 1847. This day celebrates the bravery of the original settlers and their strength of character and physical endurance.

Background

This day commemorates the entry of Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon pioneers into Utah’s Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. The Mormon pioneers viewed their arrival as the founding of a Mormon homeland, hence Pioneer Day. The Mormons, as they were commonly known, left their settlement in Nauvoo, Illinois, and journeyed west seeking refuge from religious persecution. The final impetus for their trek was the murder of founder and prophet Joseph Smith on June 27, 1844.

Determined to settle in an isolated region, the pioneers made their way across the plains and over the Rocky Mountains to Utah. They lost many of their party to disease during the winter months. By the time that they reached Utah, the desolate valley was a welcome sight. Potatoes and turnips were soon planted, and a dam was built. With solemn ceremonies, the settlers consecrated the two-square-mile city, and sent back word that the “promised land” was found. By the end of 1847, nearly 2000 Mormons settled in the Salt Lake Valley. The first Pioneer Day was celebrated in 1849 with a parade, band music and speeches. In modern times July 24 is celebrated annually as Pioneer Day, a state holiday, in Utah.
