The Bighorn Sheep of Zion National Park

Zion National Park is home to many different unique and beautiful animals. Animals like the California Condor, Mule Deer, and the Western Rattle Snake call Zion National Park home all year long. Those who will be visiting Zion National Park may get the chance to see another animal that can’t be seen in many places.
The Bighorn Sheep of Zion National Park leave guests staring in awe as they precariously maneuver their hooved feet along steep and narrow cliffs. Guests who see these impressive sheep often recall the sighting as one of the most memorable things during their trip. Though not often talked about, Bighorn Sheep are just one more incredible thing to see while in the amazing Zion National Park.

About Bighorn Sheep
Bighorn Sheep are some of the most unique creatures in Zion National Park. They are closely related to Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, but the Bighorn Sheep in Zion National Park are built for the hot, dry weather of Zion. They have long legs, small bodies, short coats, and can survive on only the water from the vegetation they consume for days at a time.
Unlike most horned mammals, where only the males possess horns, both male and female Bighorn Sheep have horns. The female’s horns are shorter and less robust while the male’s horns are long, thick, and curve around their heads. These horns are used for ramming into other males to prove dominance.
For many years, the population of Bighorn Sheep in the southern Utah area was dwindling. In the late seventies, they were reintroduced to the area to return the native species where it belonged and, ever since, the Bighorn Sheep population has been booming.

Where Bighorn Sheep can be Found in Zion
While Bighorn Sheep may be seen on many mountains and cliffs, there are a few specific areas where guests are more likely to see them. In the areas of the Zion- Mt. Carmel Tunnel and the East Entrance of the park, it is common to see the Bighorn Sheep perched high on a rocky cliff, grazing on vegetation or, resting in the shade at the base of a cliff. Drivers should take care in these areas since Bighorn Sheep may cross the road unexpectedly.

When to Observe Bighorn Sheep
Bighorn Sheep are in the area year-round, but the best time to view them is once the cool weather moves in. With the peak of the mating season beginning in October, guests can hear them slamming their horns into each other to establish dominance, secure mating rights, and claim their territory. It is an incredible sight to see these creatures fighting precariously on a cliff’s edge.
For a dose of cuteness, travelers can plan their trip around the arrival of baby Bighorn lambs. New born lambs can be seen from mid-January to late April since there is a six-month gestation period after the peak mating season in October. No matter what time of year visitors come to Zion, they will be delighted by the sight of these majestic, beautiful, and interesting animals.

Visit the Bighorn Sheep of Zion
By observing the Bighorn Sheep of Zion from a safe distance, guests will be able to have a better appreciation of the unique wildlife of Zion National Park. Whether guests are visiting the area solely to observe the wildlife or they have come for outdoor activities but stumble across the wildlife in the process, Bighorn Sheep sightings will be a highlight of the trip.

Plan Your Summer Trip

Utah has some of the most beautiful national parks in the country. Load up in your family car for a fun-filled three day vacation to Zion, Bryce, and Capitol Reef in the southern part of the state.

Bryce Canyon

Zion
The first stop is Zion. Take the park’s free shuttle to sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery as it follows the Virgin River. You’ll see some incredible emerald pools and majestic sandstone cliffs that are an amazing site to behold. Stretch your legs and take a hike on one of the many trails you’ll find in the park. The Visitor’s Center is where you can catch the shuttle and also has some very helpful information on hiking and camping. Restrooms and first aid are available too.

Bryce
The next stop is Bryce Canyon, with its surprising colorful rocks and easy walking trails. Stretch your legs and visit the Pink Ledges Trail in Red Canyon. Don’t miss the astonishing sunset at Paria View. You may be one of the lucky ones to catch a glimpse of a peregrine falcon.

Capitol Reef
You and your family will love this less crowded park. Make sure you make time to hike the Sunset Point Trail. There’s a bench at the end of the trail where you’ll be able to sit and marvel at the Capitol-like domes, Moenkopi towers, and natural bridges. For an unforgettable view, be sure to see Sulphur Creek joining the Fremont River.

Don’t forget your camera, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, and light jackets. You might even want to pack a picnic lunch with extra bottles of water. These parks can get very warm during the daytime, but will cool off during the evenings.

What to Bring When Cooking Outdoors With Kids

Summer is upon us! Those months spent wading through slosh and slush, checking outside to see if we need to bring a hoodie or a -30 degree parka just to get to work are over! For those of you who don’t live where snow comes, you don’t know how lucky you have it. But for the rest of us summer is a welcome respite of warm and relaxation, where going outdoors is a must, and cooking outdoors is an absolute joy.

So if summer inspires you and your family to cook outdoors, you should learn a few tricks on how to make the experience a truly memorable one, maybe even one that will carry you through next winter. Cooking on the grill may look fun, but it takes a little more effort than just turning on your kitchen stove and going for it. Cooking outdoors can be done with a gas or a charcoal grill or even on an open campfire (only for the brave among us).

CAMPING

Gather All Your Camping Supplies

There is a big difference between cooking on in backyard and cooking on a campsite. If you are just having a small barbeque on your own yard, it wouldn’t be too hard to just get your supplies inside the house. But if you are camping or on a picnic, it would be a good idea to make sure that you have all the necessary supplies before you head off to your destination.

There’s nothing more discouraging than arriving at the campground away from home — and probably far away from stores as well — only to realize that you have forgotten to bring the charcoal! Or if you forgot the excess water so you didn’t have anything at hand to put out the fire? Therefore, you should make sure to bring charcoal (enough of it) and fire extinguisher.

Most Essential Item For Cooking Outdoors With Kids

Buckets are very useful for any kind of outdoor activities. They can be used to keep your other supplies within easy reach, and when it rains all you have to do is grab the buckets (with everything inside them) and head for cover. Having buckets make for useful items especially when camping with kids, you just never know when you’ll need a seat, a place to put wet clothing, or a spot to keep capture frogs!

If you are going to cook on an open fire, you must be ready to kneel on the ground. You can make it a comfortable task by bringing along a kneeling cushion. It will not take too much space in your car and it would keep you scrape and scar free. After all if you’re camping with children you’re going to want to be focused on them not falling into the fire, as opposed to how much your knees are hurting at the moment.

Setting up a small kitchen is also a good idea when camping. All you will need is a folding table, a cooler, and a storage drawer (foldable or stackable). A utility cart will let you have a mini kitchen. The good thing about a utility cart is that it comes with wheels for easy maneuvering.

Serving trays are essentials that you shouldn’t forget to bring as well. You can also use your cutting board as a serving tray, but it is always better to bring extras because your kids can also use them to place their plates and glasses on when eating.

Best Outdoor Cooking Tools

Large bowls should also be included on your list, you would be slicing and cutting food items and there should be clean containers to put them in. Bowls are needed for the cooked meals and for collecting scraps for easy waste disposal.

A cast iron teapot is a flexible kitchen or camping accessory. The material is durable enough to withstand any temperature and you can place it directly in the open fire or you can also set it up on top of the grill. Brew tea or coffee, or you can also make dessert using your cast iron teapot.

Cleaning tools and materials should not be forgotten. It would be easy to tell yourself to leave the cleaning once you get home. But imagine the other chores that you need to do at home, and then think about adding cleaning the grill with those chores. It would be a better idea to clean your grill while still outdoors. You can make the task a bit easier by using a cleaning block. This cleaning tool is made of recycled glass that works great at clearing your grill off ashes and dirt.

My favorite of favorites is a cast iron pan, you can put them right on the fire or coals and be off to the races. They cook evenly and are just the perfect instrument when cooking outdoors. My kids most-liked dish is fajitas cooked in the old cast iron, trust me you’ll never have a fajitas like you’ll have when you’re camping because everything tastes better camping.

Utah’s Safest Cities

Traveling can be unsettling sometimes when in a different city or unfamiliar location and being safe can be a real concern.  Recently Safewise.com release a list of the 40 safest cities in Utah.   The Best Western Coral Hills is located just two blocks for the St. George Police Department.

Congratulations to Santa Clara, Utah,  Ivins, Utah for being the #16 Safest City in Utah!  Hurricane City Utah followed at #17, and City of St. George at #38.

Utah's Top 40 Safest Cities

Utah’s Top 40 Safest Cities

16. Safe in Santa Clara/Ivins

Although the Santa Clara Police Department was just created in 2012, this brave, little department takes its position seriously, landing the cities of Santa Clara and Ivins at number 16 on our list. From humble beginnings as a fruit and produce hub, the city has since left its fruit stand ways and become a popular suburb of …the larger Southern Utah town, St. George.
Although produce carts no longer line the streets of Santa Clara, the community has stayed just as sweet. A recent $10,000,000 project that helped renovate and expand the city’s historic downtown area is evidence of Santa Clara’s growth, proudly gaining more and more residents each year. This rapid growth is further proof of the passionate community that makes Santa Clara a desirable place to be.   Violent Crimes Per 1,000: 0.23    Property Crimes Per 1,000: 6.56

17. Safe in Hurricane

Settled as part of Brigham Young’s Cotton Mission, Hurricane is an active, outdoor community that has expanded from an agricultural settlement to a top recreation destination. But this southern Utah town hasn’t traveled too far from its roots with two operational peach and apricot orchards that are still managed by the LDS Church. In addition to farming, the city is now home to well-regarded golf courses and two reservoir lakes noted for their outstanding bass fishing.

This gateway to Utah’s stunning national parks and monuments does a good job of keeping its city safe for both residents and visitors. Relying on strong relationships within the community and proactive crime prevention and awareness efforts, the Hurricane City Police Department has an impressive record, with only 21 violent crimes reported in 2012 for this town of almost 15,000.  Violent Crimes Per 1,000: 1.47   Property Crimes Per 1,000: 19.74

 38. Safe in St. George

One of the few southern Utah cities on our list, St. George embodies the picture of Utah’s red rocks and towering plateaus. A popular tourist destination, St. George is generally temperate year-round, with short, dry winters. This idyllic weather has made St. George a popular golf destination. Visitors are also attracted to St. George for its location near Zion National Park, one of Utah’s most popular and a must-see in this area.

Locals get to have this breathtaking landscape as their backyard and playground, a major draw for many St. George residents. Add to that the security of this outdoorsy community, with only two violent crime incidents per 1,000 people, and it’s easy to see that this town is a great one to call home. Take one trip to this city and watch the rocks that surround St. George glow orange during sunset—you’ll never want to leave.  Violent Crimes Per 1,000: 2.05  Property Crimes Per 1,000: 20.60
